Whitney Oaks has written down what a garage door there may look like, right down to where the glass is allowed to go.

A new garage door on a house in Whitney Oaks starts with an application, not an order. The association's CC&Rs make the installation or alteration of anything on the outside of a home subject to approval by its Architectural Review Committee, and garage door is one of the items named on the committee's application form. That form is the homeowner's to file: contractors are not able to submit it on an owner's behalf. The committee meets monthly, and the form itself warns that processing can take up to 45 days.

What the committee reads for is spelled out in its design guidelines. Doors in wood, composite or metal sections are acceptable. Windows may be included in the top of the door, so long as the glass does not exceed 25% of the door's square footage. Color is a separate question: the association's paint palette sets some colors apart as not available for use on garage doors, and the paint form asks for an application on every painting project, including a repaint in the same approved color. So before you apply, it pays to have the door itself pinned down — material, where any windows sit, how much of it is glass, and the color — and that is a list worth settling before anything is ordered.

Two more lines in the same guidelines are about the door you already have. A dented metal door that can be seen from the street is to be replaced within sixty days, and the application form warns that processing can take up to 45 days, so if a dent is why you need a new door, start the application early. And garage doors are to be closed within ten minutes of opening, which is worth knowing if the opener has started reversing on the way down and leaving the door up.

Committee approval is not a permit, either. The guidelines say an approval does not waive any permit that may be required by the City of Rocklin, the county, the state or a utility. Springfield at Whitney Oaks has its own governing documents and its own review committee, and the Whitney Oaks palette says its colors are not for Springfield, or for Units 39 and 44, so owners there should start with their own committee.

Run it a few times on purpose — before the next trip out to a Thunder Athletics game at Rocklin High School, say, or to the Sierra College Natural History Museum on the college's Rocklin campus — and note which noises come back on every cycle and which come and go.
